Gilsonite (Natural Bitumen / Asphalt)
In the recent years, Iran has become a major exporter of Gilsonite (Natura Asphalt) to India, China and many other countries in the region. Iran, posses some of the richest mines of Gilsonite, which are used in many industries, including road construction, the paint industry, polish and insulation of tanks and tubes and molding.
Gilsonite or Natural Bitumen is also known as Natural Asphalt, Asphalting, and is soluble in petroleum asphalt solvents. Gilsonite is used in the hardening of oil products and it is easily converted to powder form.
Gilsonite Natural Asphalt , Natural Bitumen , Hard Asphalt or Hard Asphaltum is used as a performance-enhancing agent for asphalt mixes. Gilsonite-modified paving mixes achieve higher PG grades and incorporate perfectly into the asphalt blend with no need for high shear milling as is the case with many other modifiers. Gilsonite can partially or totally replace, or complement, the use of SBS polymers in modified asphalts at a fraction of the cost. Gilsonite-modified asphalts have higher stability, reduced deformation, reduced temperature susceptibility and increased resistance to water stripping than non-modified asphalts. Gilsonite is also used to make both solvent-based and emulsion pavement sealers with superior appearance and weathering properties.
Iranian Gilsonite is the other brand for the mineral known as natural bitumen which is found in Kermanshah and Gilane Gharb located in Iran and also found in Utah in the United States, but can be obtained from Iran at a fraction of the price than that of the U.S.
Gilsonite primarily is used in dark-colored printing inks and paints, oil well drilling mud and cements, asphalt modifiers, foundry sands additives and a wide range of chemical products.
Uses
Gilsonite Natural Asphalt Natural Bitumen in Oil & Gas
Gilsonite is used in drilling mud fluids and oil well cementing. Gilsonite, in a range of softening points and particle sizes, is a standard ingredient in oil-based drilling muds used in shales and other difficult geological formations. The addition of specially-treated Gilsonite to water-based drilling fluids helps minimize hole washout by stabilizing troublesome shales, and seals off highly permeable sands while reducing torque and drag. The addition of Gilsonite to oil well cements reduces slurry weight without loss of compressive strength and acts as an effective bridging and plugging agent to seal fractures in weak formations while cementing. also Gilsonite use in Mud drilling according to FLC " Filtrate Loss Control " or " Fluid Loss Control " in oil base mud .
Gilsonite Natural Asphalt Natural Bitumen in Inks and Paints
Gilsonite Resin is widely used as the primary carbon black wetting agent for black news inks and headset and gravure inks. Iranian Gilsonite Resin competes advantageously with petroleum-based hydrocarbon resins, phenolic resins and metal resinates, all of which it can complement or replace to various degrees. Various concentrations of Iranian Gilsonite Resin are used to manufacture law-rub-off news inks with superior gloss and tack properties. Special grades of Gilsonite called Selects are also standard ingredients in black ink formulations and are used as additives in asphaltic paints and varnishes.
For Paint , If added to asphaltic paints and varnishes, Gilsonite's unique qualities improve their roughness, gloss and chemical and weather resistance.
Printing Inks, Gilsonite is an important cost-effective ingredients in the manufacture of high quality vehicles for dark printing inks.
Gilsonite Natural Asphalt Natural Bitumen in Foundry
Gilsonite is combined with coal and other ingredients as an additive in foundry sands to insure the quality of the molded part by improving mold release and the overall finish of metal castings.
Gilsonite Natural Asphalt Natural Bitumen in Chemical
Gilsonite combines with many other chemicals and materials that take advantage of its unique physical and chemical properties. Binder and coating applications in metallurgical, wood product, refractary and other industries further demonstrate the versatility and usefulness of this remarkable material.
Gilsonite has many industrial applications, including metal alloy processing, refractary, steel desulfurization, friction products, wood products, waterproof pipe coatings, and adhesives. It is a non-toxic, non-carcinogenic alternative to coal tar pitch as well as an economical alternative to mineral rubber.
Gilsonite is used as a binder and mixing agent in steel desulfurization products. It has consistent volatiles that promote mixing of the other desulfurization chemicals like magnesium and hydrated lime. It will also add carbon content to the steel and will provide a reductive atmosphere as it oxidizes at high temperatures.
Gilsonite is used to make waterproof coatings for water pipes. It is a natural non-toxic resin with excellent adhesion properties. A corrosion-resistant, chemically inert pipe coating can be made from Gilsonite.
The wood products industry also uses Gilsonite as a binder. It has excellent waterproofing and weather resistant properties. Because Gilsonite is a hard resin it will make a very hard particleboard.

l. INTRODUCTION
Flexible pavements with asphaltic concrete are widely used all over the world. Asphalt acting as a binder for aggregates is a very important ingredient affecting the life cycle and travel comfort on roads. It has been an established fact that normal bituminous course can not cope up with the following problems:
i. Increasing traffic on road / endemic overloading of vehicles leading to undulations, rutting, cracking, deformations, potholing and shortening of life of asphaltic pavements.
ii. High range of temperatures causing pavements to become softer in summer and brittle in winter.
iii. Rains / water causing extensive stripping problems in asphaltic pavements.
To overcome the above problems in the entire world it has become a regular practice to use modifier as additives to strengthen the asphalt for making longer lasting asphalt mixes. This has been a very important development in the last 3 decades and has lead not only to huge saving by delaying the maintenance cycles of the road but also its importance has been felt in countries where aggregates and asphalt are in short supply .
NBP super is a crumb rubber based asphalt modifier. It is manufactured by blending chemically treated crumb rubber, natural asphalt and Bismides chemicals. Natural asphalt is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon mineral that is high in asphaltense and high in the Nitrogen. When added to asphalt it dramatically increases the asphalt's viscosity, lowering penetration while increasing the softening point.
The chemically treated crumb rubber and Bismides have been designed to rapidly blend in to asphait. The addition of rubber gives the additional binding strength, increasing elasticity and softening point of the asphalt. Carbon present in rubber acts as an anti-oxidant and prevents asphalt from ageing and oxidization with sun. The blend of these two i.e. NBP-Super is a complete modifier which gives over all improvement when mixed with Asphalt by way of better resistance against hot , cold and wet weather conditions. It also gives increased binding strength.
ll. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Physical properties of the Modifier are as follows:

lll. ADVANTAGES
NBP-Super modifier substantially improves the vital properties of asphalt. NBP-Super can eaily be blended with conventional grades of asphalt giving following benefits to the base asphalt.
i. Increase of Softening point by at least 25%-thereby giving it protection against hot climatic conditions.
ii. Increase in Elastic Recovery by at least 400% - thereby improving resistance to cold climatic conditions and resistance to cracking under stress.
iii. Lower penetration thereby making harder grade of asphalt, giving additional strength to the road and reduces water damage.
iv. Improvement in Ageing Characteristics thereby giving longer life to the roads.
v. Improved Adhesion thereby giving better strength, stability and longer life.
vi. Reduce noise pollution.
vii. Saves energy and natural resources.
Further more, NBP-Super has unique characteristics against other polymers thet it does not require specialized equipment for mixing it with asphalt and also heating and reheating of asphalt has minimal effect on the properties of the modifier.
lV. CONCLUSION
The NBP-Super product has been designed to incorporate the proven benefits of natural asphalt and visco-elastic properties of rubber. The mixture is intended to be cost effective and easy to use. The most critical elements is even dispersion of modifier through out asphalt matrix.
i. Cost increase in modified asphalt is around 25-30% in comparison to the plain asphalt.
ii. Cost increase in hot mix is around 10-12%.
iii. The life of pavement goes up by 2-2.5 times.
iv. Binder content in hot mix designs reduces by 8-10% depending upon the aggregates and asphaltic mix design.

Quality: The quality is cst 380 specification.
Quotation: Price is based on the price of cst 180 + a premium of USD 2 to USD 12/mt. The premium will be set latest 10 days before laycan of the carrying vessel. Please note that cargo is cst 380 but for price, the price of cst 180 + a premium will be considered (as published in Platt for Persian gulf). The average of prices on the loading day, one day before and one day after will be the final price for loaded goods. Long term contract is possible.
